The Hunger Games : Main Character

      The novel I have read is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The main character in this story is Katniss Everdeen , a sixteen-year-old girl , who lives alone with her mother and younger sister .The story begins with Katniss Everdeen , a brave girl that willing to sacrifice her life for her younger sister , Primrose Everdeen . In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of the Panem , a shining capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts .The capitol keeps the district in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the age of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games , a fight to the death on live TV show . Katniss and her family are living in District 12 , nicknamed seam . Her house is located at almost the edge of Seam .She only have to pass a few gates to reach the scruffy field called the Meadow . Every morning , Katniss will enter the woods to hunt to earn money although it is illegal.

      The annual reaping day is reach , when Effie Trinket reads out the name , it's not her but Primrose Everdeen , her younger sister .Katniss was shock at the moment . It is unbelievable that only a twelve-year-old girl was chosen to participate the hunger games . None of the things can be do for Prim but volunteered to participate . It turns everyone shock because there is no one to volunteer to participate in the hunger games at the previous year . Once you are in the game , you must kill each other to win the games and only one will survive ! Katniss 's brave action and willing sacrifice her live for her sister was touched by everyone but still powerless to the power of capitol . At the same time , Peter Mellark , another boy who have been chosen to participate the hunger games . He was a former schoolmate of Katniss who once gave her bread from his family's bakery when her family was starving.

      After the reaping , Katniss stay strong to face anything that could happen in the future . She get into trouble when she first met her drunken mentor, Haymitch Abernathy , victor of the 50th Hunger Games, instructs them to watch and determine the strengths and weaknesses of the other tributes . But all of this was Katniss misunderstanding Haymitch . During that time, Peeta reveals on-air his long time unrequited love for Katniss. Katniss believes this to be a ploy to gain sponsors , who can be critical to survival because of their ability to send gifts such as food, medicine, and tools to favoured tributes during the Games although he was not the person she love . Nothing she can do but just accept the offer .

       The 74th hunger games finally reach , she take a big courage to step off the metal circle when the sound of gong sound release them . There are total 24 tributes from all district , that means she need to kill 23 person to win this hunger games . She was not bear to kill the others , after all she was only sixteen-year-old girl , but the hunger games is cruel .Twelve people was dead on the first day of hunger games .Katniss was determine to win the games , she relies on her well-practiced hunting and survival skills to remain unharmed and concealed from the other tributes . After a few days , she met her alliance , Rue , who was just only twelve-year-old girl from agricultural district 11 . Rue's exist reminded her younger sister . She was kind and treat her as her real sister .In the meantime, Peeta appears to have joined forces with the tributes from the richer districts. However, when he has the opportunity to kill Katniss, he instead saves her from the others . Rue save her but after that she was killed by other tributes , whom Katniss then kills in self-defence with an arrow . This is the first time Katniss killed people but she was not regret . Katniss sings to Rue until she dies, and spreads flowers over her body as a sign of respect for Rue and disgust towards the Capitol. This shows that Katniss is a respectful and a kind person .

     As a result , a rule change is announced midway through the Games, allowing two tributes from the same district to win the Hunger Games as a couple because of Katniss and Peeta's image in the minds of the audience as "star-crossed lovers" . Upon of this , Katniss felt it was a big chance to win the hunger games . She find Peeta immediately . Her perseverance brings her to Peeta who was wounded , hiding under the camouflage  . As she nurses him back to health, she acts the part of a young girl falling in love to gain more favour with the audience and, consequently, gifts from her sponsors. When Katniss and Peeta remains as the last two surviving tributes, the Gamemakers change back the rule again attempt to force them into a dramatic finale, in which one must kill the other to win. At that moment , Katniss know that the Gamemaker will never let both of them win , she make a last decision :  retrieves highly poisonous berries known as "nightlock" from her pouch and offers some to Peeta. The gamemaker realize that both of them are ready to commit suicide , he then announce that both of them are the victors of the 74th hunger games .

  In conclusion , the main character Katniss Everdeen is a brave , determine and love family person . I learn from Katniss Everdeen that we must determine to face every problem you met and appreciate every moment that you have with your family and friends .
